OMHA 2017 Championships

Show: OMHA 2017 ChampionshipsVenue: Garnet B Rickard26 photos

The championship ceremony for the OMHA's 2016-17 AAA Minor Atom playoffs, at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville, Clarington. The job was to turn a minor-hockey final into a big-game entrance.

We built the entrance on the ice: a square truss arch over the players' gate, blue LEDs inside its legs, four moving heads across the top, and a haze machine at its base. With the arena lights down, each player skated out through the arch into their own coloured spot, while the moving heads threw beams and patterns across the ice.

A red carpet on the ice carried the MC and a brass ensemble for the anthem, a free-standing projection screen showed the championship graphic with the four teams' logos, and a DJ controller handled the walk-out music.

An arena is an unusual room to light: the floor is ice, and everything at ice level had to stand up on its own.
